Madrigal

Bass pedals cover for “Madrigal”. A lot of the work consisted in getting a sound on the bass pedals close to the original. I think Chris also was very thoughtful in that respect – he didn’t choose the usual “Taurus” sound which has more contour with raspy highs. That’s why I think he went for the “Tuba” preset, which sounds much more discrete. Of course I wanted to underline the bass line but I realized that too loud would be overpowering all the song, so I tried to find a balance. It’s possible that Chris would like the pedals to sound louder in the album. Unfortunately, the video clip version has bad audio – perhaps a good quality of that mix would be as Chris liked. In any case, the notes are what I hear from that version, so it’s Chris’ choice (discounting any mistake from me). I especially like the B he plays over G major, (1st inversion) which he uses to descend to D, in the final verse – that was mixed out of the album version.

On The Silent Wings Of Freedom (remaster)

While I don’t have time to complete the next video, I have tried to produce a slightly better quality audio/video version of my first upload. I had to use some different settings for the fx and fixed sync issues. This time I used Amplitube’s “Nu-Tron” to emulate the Mu-Tron III pedal. I also added some chorus, which I found out to be somewhat close to the “harmonised” sound used here and elsewhere on Tormato.

When I started to listen Yes from the 70’s, my friend lent me Tormato – he thought that it would be a nice mid term to start with…
That was when I started to appreciate some Yessongs. I recorded the vinyl LP to a cassete… all of it? No… I didn’t care too much for 2 songs that were not so “beautiful” or “melodic”… indeed they seemed to me only noisy and disjointed. Those were “Release, Release” and “On the Silent Wings of Freedom” (would you believe?)…. So… perspective and tastes will always change – always irrationally – and while some songs we enjoy at first listen and start getting tired of them, others spend years before we start to like them, but once we get the picture – our own picture – it will stay forever.

This is an old recording from 2000 that I transformed into a video clip, because I’m short of time for now but I’d still like to make something for my own and for those of you who like to watch my videos.

Onward – A “Rickenbacker Kiss”

An idea that was inspired by the story (many of you may know) behind the very end of Safe (Canon Song).

I am playing my 4001 CS bass which is unplugged. Holding it against the back of my (plugged) 360 guitar… a Rickenbacker Kiss.
I experimented with different guitar tunings that would resonate well with the song’s tonalities. Onward is a based one the I, VI, V and vi of C major, and modulated a step higher afterwards.
The guitar tuning I did (eventually using a capo) was selected to accommodate all these chords. Ones sound better than others. B minor was, for example, a bit less successful, as well as all passages with an F sharp.
Then I adapted the whole piece – melody and a sort of accompaniment with the lower register which is not related to the actual bass line. The initial riff is my transformation of the original intro, and the coda.. I came up with a way to modulate back to C major. A bit dangerous too cause B flat (G minor) and A flat (F minor) were used… but then finally I got the best resonance spot to end the piece on an improvised Safe-like finale.

One very interesting thing is that – after tuning both instruments with the tuner, I found the resonance wasn’t happening… so I fine tuned on my bass by ear, and found the resonance spots for each string… maybe a few cents lower than the “right” tuning. I know it’s still not perfect but it’s a fact that it wasn’t working with both guitars tuned by the tuner. I think this has to do with the tempered scale of the fretboard that is “fighting” with the natural harmonics of the guitar’s open strings.

While not optimal, I decided to post it to show you the idea. It has some interesting sounds and with more time I will come again to it!

On the Silent Wings of Freedom was my first YES-bassline video, recorded, most appropriately, to celebrate Chris Squire’s 60th birthday.
