Around six years ago I was experimenting with video effects and recorded this cover of Machine Messiah. Since then, YouTube’s audio and video compression capabilities improved a lot so I figured that this one could be sort of remastered both sonic and visually. As I had the green screen behind me, and although the lighting put a big shadow on it, I decided to make some different video effects, not as flashy as the first version. Most of all, I hope now the sound is better and you enjoy this cover of one of my favourite Yes compositions and basslines!

Dear friends, here is my cover for part ii of Fly From Here – Sad Night at the Airfield.
For this track I had to use my 5 string Warwick.
Interesting fact that Chris’ Tobias has an extended range not only low-wise but also high. That repetitive high F sharp that Chris plays on his first (D) string corresponds to a 27th fret! Even my Warwick has “only” 26 so I played it on the G string.
I really like this bassline. Many details and slight nuances are hidden because of the kind of mixing that was made on this track. I hope that I didn’t miss too many… and that you will hear better how Chris thought of the different passages on an apparently simple chord progression.
Then there is that middle bass solo with a Chorus effect , almost sounding like a “detuned” vibrato.
Other interesting aspect that I found was the amount of editing that was made possibly by Trevor Horn. I tried to illustrate with the video what I perceived from that post-editing. Not like common “rock” productions – It seems that bass notes are chopped and used elsewhere without necessarily wanting to “disguise” so nobody notices it. In other styles this is very common to do… Trevor Horn maybe was here responsible for this editing. I think it suits very well the album concept… it’s not too different of what they did with Close to the Edge, only with new technology and musical context.

When I started to listen Yes from the 70’s, my friend lent me Tormato – he thought that it would be a nice mid term to start with…
That was when I started to appreciate some Yessongs. I recorded the vinyl LP to a cassete… all of it? No… I didn’t care too much for 2 songs that were not so “beautiful” or “melodic”… indeed they seemed to me only noisy and disjointed. Those were “Release, Release” and “On the Silent Wings of Freedom” (would you believe?)…. So… perspective and tastes will always change – always irrationally – and while some songs we enjoy at first listen and start getting tired of them, others spend years before we start to like them, but once we get the picture – our own picture – it will stay forever.
This is an old recording from 2000 that I transformed into a video clip, because I’m short of time for now but I’d still like to make something for my own and for those of you who like to watch my videos.

Perhaps my favourite Michael Steele bassline, but there are many… This was one that I started playing bass with, back in the days I bought the album in ’86 and I got my first bass on the following year. What strikes me the most about this bassline are the subtle passages on chord transitions, which are so good taste, very discrete and make the whole song flow. Listening carefully to Michael’s playing here, I can guess that she did the whole song in one take, for many of the passages here are really thought of “on-the-fly”, as she never repeats the exact same pattern on similar passages. She must have had the song so present that, along with her abilities, was able to let herself go with the groove. This bassline is a study on how you can make several great sounding basslines on a simple chord structure, and doing “your thing” without imposing your playing. By the way, Michael definitely wouldn’t need it as the is shining with her voice. September Gurls was written by Alex Chilton in 1974 and covered by The Bangles on the “Different Light” album, from 1986.
