Dear Friends, the second edition of “Play For Chris” is open to all who wish to join in a demonstration of thankfulness, remembering and celebrating the life and music of Chris Squire. Here’s how you can participate:
1 – Record a video of yourself singing or playing your instrument of choice, preferably something from Chris or Yes’ catalogue. Please act especially for this occasion. Do something now – in the Present – rather than using previously produced material – Play for Chris!
2 – Include a text message about your feelings for Chris, what his music means
to you. The text will be displayed along with your video.
If you don’t play or sing at all you may still participate by sending a video of yourself speaking, with a message stating your feelings for Chris.
Optionally you may send graphical content such as a drawing, painting or photo
composition about or dedicated to Chris.You can include the text message to be displayed along with the image.
3-Send your files to me (email@example.com) by the method you prefer, just let me know. The limit date is the 30th of April 2016. Please try to keep your contributions up to 90 seconds and allow me to edit them, if needed, in order to fit all contributions in one clip, and as evenly as possible.
Let’s keep celebrating Chris’ music here on earth and, as the name says,
to keep playing for Chris!

For over a year I’m teaming up with fellow bass players Alvaro Rosso and José Miguel Pereira in a double-bass trio format – Basso3 (facebook page)
Since around 2009 I have started to experiment with other musicians from the improvisation field, in particular participating on the MIA encounters and more recently at the MEIA festival in Aveiro. It was precisely on the opening edition of this event that the concert now registered in the shape of an album took place, in a brilliant effort by the Pássaro Vago label.
The album is on free streaming but the CD may also be purchased at Pássaro Vago’s bancamp page.

Around six years ago I was experimenting with video effects and recorded this cover of Machine Messiah. Since then, YouTube’s audio and video compression capabilities improved a lot so I figured that this one could be sort of remastered both sonic and visually. As I had the green screen behind me, and although the lighting put a big shadow on it, I decided to make some different video effects, not as flashy as the first version. Most of all, I hope now the sound is better and you enjoy this cover of one of my favourite Yes compositions and basslines!

Today I found on YouTube the release of one of my previous bands (Caffeine) last album. As I remember it was recorded around 2005.
I used my Fender Jazz Bass on all tracks. Here is one of the tracks and the others are also available on the same channel.
Last month, the collective “P.R.E.C” presented a live soundtrack performance for the film “The Fall of the House of Usher”. The music was totally improvised. If you are interested in these forms of sonic expression, you can access the recorded performance by downloading the file or listening in streaming.
Personally, I find this kind of music very rewarding to perform. There are no predefined rules whatsoever and all we can count on is the sensibility and communication of each musician. It doesn’t always necessarily work well, or does it correspond to our expectations or desires – like life itself – It’s many times a mirror of each one’s personality or state of mind, in this case, stimulated by the suggestions of a moving picture. That’s the challenge that I find interesting.

MiMi Records released a CD entitled “3 sopros x 3 contrabaixos” (3 winds x 3 doublebasses). These are recordings from a live performance of the Curado, Chagas, Viegas “Wind Trio”, featuring japanese doublebassist Maresuke Okamoto, on his first visit to Portugal, last April. To complete the bass trio, myself and fellow local bassist José Miguel Pereira were invited.
The performance is fully improvised. This was a great opportunity for me to play with experienced musicians and to try different ways of sound expression.
